STELLING SWALLOWTAIL - Pre-Loved - 2007 Fingerstyle: Banjostore

Darn near mint condition, and a rare Stelling to see in Australia. The highest quality workmanship and finishing detail we've seen in a long time. Steve Martin owns one! - Sold

The Swallowtail is named after a jig by the same name, suggested by Tom Hanway, an American now living in Ireland. Tom began his 5-string banjo career under the tuition of Bill Keith and Tony Trischka in New York and has become well known as an author, teacher, promotor and performer of Celtic style 5-string banjo. In 1997 Tom Hanway joined forces with Geoff Stelling to produce the Swallowtail - one of the most successful models Stelling has ever made. We suspect it's not just good looks that accounts for this banjo's popularity; we have been particularly impressed with its ability to produce astounding clarity and volume across every string and its willingness to be tweaked to favour either driving 'Stelling-sound" bluegrass or the purity of its many voices over the tonal range suited to single-string Celtic style picking.

Sunburst stained, highly figured Curly Maple neck and resonator. Bound ebony fretboard with delightful swallow, oakleaf, acorns, and Celtic knot inlays of abalone and mother-of-pearl. Pearl swallow motif is repeated in the headstock and resonator. Stelling patented tone ring, one piece flange. Tony Pass "Lost Forest" old wood rim. Nickel hardware, Stelling signature tailpiece. Geared tuners with pearloid buttons. Kat Eyz bridge. Compensated nut. 1-1/4" nut width, 26-3/8" scale, 22 frets and railroad spikes at frets 7-10.
A magnificent banjo - a very special instrument.
